The County of Maui, Department of Agriculture (MDOA) proposes to develop the 262-acre Upcountry Maui Agricultural Park (UMAP) Project on lands identified as Tax Map Key (TMK) (2)2-5-001:002 (Parcel 2), and related water system improvements located on TMK Nos. (2)2-5-002:001 (por.) (Parcel 1), (2)2-3-002:099 (por.) (Parcel 99) and ʻOmaʻopio Road (por.), in Kula, Maui, Hawaiʻi. Parcel 2 is located near the intersection of ʻŌmaʻopio Road and Pūlehu Road, about 0.7-miles or 2,000 feet makai of the existing Kula Agricultural Park (KAP). Parcel 2 of the project area was formerly used for sugar cane cultivation by Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Company and Parcels 1 and 99 contain existing water system infrastructure. The County will reconfigure Parcel 2 into 28 improved farm sites that will be leased by the MDOA to local farmers and businesses for diversified agriculture. Infrastructural improvements on Parcel 2 will include roads, an irrigation system to deliver non-potable water, and electrical systems to each lot. Parcel 99 is the site for a new 2.4 million gallon reservoir expansion within the existing KAP and Parcel 1 is the site for an additional booster pump at an existing pump station to deliver water to the UMAP. Additionally, a 12-inch water distribution main along ʻŌmaʻopio Road will be extended to enable water usage at the farm sites. Two (2) new intersections will be constructed on Pūlehu Road to facilitate vehicular access to the project.
