As the notice prints it
The steep ʻAlelele slope along Hāna Highway in Kīpahulu, East Maui, is prone to rockfalls due to natural weathering and erosion of the volcanic rock. Falling rocks present a serious safety risk to drivers, can damage vehicles and the roadway, and have caused temporary highway closures. In May 2023, a rockfall incident occurred on the Hāna Highway beyond the extent of the existing rock netting. In addition, the existing rockfall netting along the ʻAlelele slope is severely corroded from constant salt spray and is no longer considered effective for protection of the roadway. The proposed action consists of installing a stainless-steel coated double-twisted mesh drape rockfall mitigation system over approximately 320,000 square feet of the ʻAlelele cliff face adjacent to Hāna Highway. This system will replace the existing deteriorated netting and expand coverage to better mitigate rockfall events at this location on the Hāna Highway.
